For some years Khen Rinpoche has carried the aspiration to construct a full size mandala of the 42 peaceful (zhi wa) and 58 wrathful (tro wo) dieties of the Guhyagarbha Tantra. As the Padmasambhava World Peace project neared completion with the construction and placement of 26 large statues of Guru Rinpoche, Khen Rinpoche's energies are now focussed on bringing this project to fruition.
There are no other full size Zhitro mandalas anywhere in the world with the exc
eption of one that was constructed by Khen Rinpoche's teacher Kyabje Jigme Phuntsok in Serta in Eastern Tibet. While Jigme Phuntsok did construct a full size mandala it was not populated with the 100 dieties. So Khen Rinpoche's vision is a full-scale mandala complete with statues of each of the 100 dieties.
To date, Khen Rinpoche has commissioned the creation of all 100 statues. Some are already complete and others are in various stages of fabrication. Some statiues are being done by skilled statue makers in Patan in the Kathmandu Valley, an area famous for Newar statue makers. Other statues are being fabricated in clay by Bhutanese statue makers and then cast in brass by statue makers in Delhi.
Before the passing of Kyabje Penor Rinpoche, Khen Rinpoche consulted
Holiness regarding the best location for the mandala and Holiness said that the best place would be in Nepal at Yangleshod where the Nyingma Palyul Retreat Center is located; however, if the political situation became too uncertain then Holiness recommended that the mandala be located in Bodh Gaya on the land of the Palyul center there. Holiness much preferred Yangleshod if at all possible because of the profound connection with Guru Rinpoche and the Guhyagarbha Tantra. Khen Rinpoche has identified a site within the retreat center for the mandala.
